Accommodation Successes

We’ve found accommodation solutions for 17 people in the last 7 days!

What this means is that we have either found people who were rough sleeping somewhere to stay, or prevented a family, or individual from becoming homeless to begin with. Outcomes like this go a long way towards us achieving the No Second Night Out standard across the Liverpool Region and would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteer teams.

The Whitechapel Centre recognizes that there is no simple ‘one size fits all’ approach to support.  For this reason we provide a broad range of support services that aim to meet a diverse range of needs. If you, or someone you know needs our help please either drop in at our Enablement Centre on Langsdale Street or fill in our referral form here http://www.whitechapelcentre.co.uk/make-a-referral.html ; or if they are rough sleeping call 0300 123 2041 and one of our outreach team will help them.

Whitechapel FC Meet John Bishop!

Today was a very exciting day for WFC as they were joined in training by the extremely popular Liverpudlian comedian, John Bishop.

John was there, with a film crew, in the lead up to his 'Week of Hell'  BT Sport Relief challenge. http://www.sportrelief.com/whats-on/celebrity-challenges/bishops-week-of-hell

It was a great success, plenty more detail, stories and photos to follow. We wish John the best of luck on his challenge.

This is brilliant news for us all at The Whitechapel Centre as it means more people will get to hear about the important work that we do within the community and for homeless and vulnerable people throughout the Liverpool region..

Whitechapel Football Club - WFC

Hi All,

Every Wednesday and Friday the Whitechapel football team meet for training, under the strict guidance of Manager and coach, Peter F, and the help of Everton FC.

Whitechapel FC provides an opportunity for its members to improve fitness, become a member of a team, and make new friends. Everyone who wants to has an opportunity to play.

After a slow start to the season, and losing our first four games, it seems that all the training and hard work is beginning to pay off.

Whitechapel FC were bottom of the  FA's Kick Racism Out Of Football League at the start of this current campaign, but after Monday’s tournament games, in aid of Imagine Your Goals Mental Health League, held at Sefton Sports Academy, we move up to second place!

Next week Thursday 23rd we will be taking part in a comic relief project with comedian John Bishop.

If you are interested in joining please contact: Peter on 07531 881981 or ask any member of staff for more information.

No Second Night Out - NSNO

Since the launch of the NSNO last Thursday we have received 27 calls from the general public.
Most of the calls were made early evening, reporting people outside supermarkets, or public houses in town. When following up the calls we found that the majority of these individuals were actually already accommodated.

One such call was however from a concerned member of the public, reporting that a man was sleeping rough behind corrugated sheeting in Halewood.  Local residents were becoming increasingly concerned about his behaviour and well being.
Our newly appointed PAN Merseyside support worker Jo, along with one of our tireless volunteers, Karl,  made contact with the man, accompanied him to The Royal Hospital to have him assessed by the crisis team and  also found him a temporary place to stay.  There is no telling what would have become of this man without the NSNO campaign and the determination of Jo and her team.

Granada Reports visits The Whitechapel Centre

The Granada Reports team visited The Enablement Centre today as part of the No Second Night Out launch. Watch the programme at 6pm tonight and you may just see a few familiar faces!
The No Second Night Out Campaign was launched today at St Georges Hall where all the councils across Merseyside signed up to achieving the No Second Night Out Standard. The Standard aims to ensure that by the end of December 2012, no one will live on the streets of the Liverpool City Region and no individual arriving on the streets for the first time will sleep out for more than one night. Liverpool City Region is the second region outside London to launch the standard .Outreach services for rough sleepers throughout the city region will be coordinated by the Whitechapel Centre.

No Second Night Out campaign launched across Merseyside

A campaign has been launched to ensure no one will live on the streets of Merseyside and no individual sleeping rough for the first time will sleep out for more than one night.

People living in the Liverpool City Region are being urged to support the campaign by phoning the local helpline whenever they see a rough sleeper on 0300 123 2041. By ringing this number you will support local homeless agencies to ensure no new rough sleeper spends more than a single night on the streets.

The No Second Night Out campaign is backed by councils in Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton who will ensure that appropriate services are available across the whole city region.

The Liverpool City Region is the first to officially adopt the standard outside London, where the No Second Night Out pilot has ensured 70% of new rough sleepers do not return to the streets.
Outreach services for rough sleepers will be coordinated by the Whitechapel Centre, who have received funding for this initiative along with Liverpool YMCA.
David Carter , Whitechapel Centre’s chief executive said: ‘I am delighted that we have been chosen to provide assertive outreach services across the Liverpool City Region in order to help deliver and achieve the ‘No Second Night Out’ standard.  This partnership between the six councils and an array of different providers will transform services, ensuring real options are made available to support new rough sleepers off the streets within 24 hours.’
